- Theology of Ministry with Young People
I work at United Methodist Church of the Resurrection which has the purpose statement of “To build a Christian community where non-religious and nominally religious people are becoming deeply committed Christians”. I seek to fully embody this statement on my theology of ministry with youth. I seek to continually reach out to those new to faith or the church and to help them to encounter God and to discover God and the redemptive power of Christ in their heart, mind and souls. This is done through a holistic approach of encouraging students to be active in multigenerational worship, to be present at youth group, to become committed to a small group and trained volunteers who can invest in their lives, to study scripture and practice personal spiritual disciplines, and to spread their faith through evangelism as well as service and missions. Each student will carve out their own path, but each of the listed elements can be crucial building blocks to building a God-based foundation in their lives. Once a student grows toward a deeper faith they are also encouraged to be in leadership while in high school, either with their peers, younger students, or in other areas of the church. A student who owns their faith and invests in it is much more likely to continue to live out their faith after high school graduation in college or the world.
- How will connecting with me support your ministry?
I am blessed to have had a number of life opportunities to this point that have helped prepare me for youth ministry as well as to help guide others. I have served either internships or full-time youth ministry positions at churches of 300, 800, 1500, 2000, 6000 and 15000+ members, so I have experience in many settings. I was privileged to be able to go to seminary where I spent three years studying and growing in faith, and those three years of Christian growth and formation help me to stand on a foundation much larger than just my own perspective or experience in ministry and the church. Because I am at United Methodist Church of the Resurrection which seeks renewal of the church across the US I am continually networking with other churches and youth ministries as well as leading workshops and occasionally getting to write curriculum and other youth ministry materials. I also have access to a great number of helpful resources in my local church setting. But above and beyond all those things, I have an absolute passion for the Lord and feel called to help students to encounter and be transformed by Christ. I want to help connect with, laugh with, and share with others in youth ministry who share this passion and mentor as well as learn from my peers in youth ministry.
