Theology of Ministry with Young People

My theology of ministry with youth (or young adults) is grounded in what I learned in my first year of youth ministry from Dr. Kenda Creasy-Dean, that the core of ministry with young people is connecting our beliefs about God and Christ and Church with how we live as disciples. It is anchored in The UMC baptismal vow to remain faithful members of Christ’s holy church and serve as Christ’s representatives in the world. It is supported in Paul’s words to the Romans in chapter 12, to not be conformed to the world’s patterns but transformed to discern the will of God. This theology of ministry recognizes the mystery and power of our faith, the glory of God in creation, the salvation and life offered in Christ, and the invitation to relationship offered by God to all through Christ. We accept Christ’s invitation to follow, and then we invite youth and young adults to follow with us and with each other, to practice together being Christ’s representatives in the world, and in that practice to make disciples and transform our world.

How will connecting with me support your ministry?

Through a fellowship experience shortly after I began in youth ministry, I recognized God had put on my heart a deep passion and desire to support, encourage, and inspire those in the field of youth work. One of my greatest values is helping others to grow and flourish in ministry, particularly in ministry with young people. With personal experience growing up in a smaller church (80 in worship), to serving in a mega-church (3500 in worship), I have a diverse background of experiences to draw from, and I’ve been blessed by opportunities to meet a lot of youth workers and gain their perspective. I’m a facilitator as much as a teacher, so I bring a desire not to give answers in contexts I don’t understand but to help peers discover their context, connect through youth and young adult ministry networks, and find the answers that fit within their context. I believe in the mission of The United Methodist Church to make disciples of Jesus Christ to transform the world, and I believe we can serve that mission faithfully by investing time and resources in connecting, training, supporting, and encouraging those in ministry with youth, the single most influential time in people’s life of faith.
